Reconnecting with Nature
An Introduction to Biomimicry and Ecological Citizenship

Workshop Information
This one-day experience combines deep nature connection with an introduction to ecological design thinking, empowering participants with tools for emotional health, hope, and resilience.
This is a workshop for those seeking solace, connection, and direction amidst today’s ecological and social challenges. Through deep nature connection practices, guided reflections, and experiential learning, we reconnect with nature not as something external to us—but as kin, guide and mentor.
You will discover the ‘core routines’ of nature connection and the ability to bring these into your daily life in simple ways. This can significantly increase physical and emotional wellbeing and provide a ‘felt sense’ of being in supportive reciprocal relationships with the wider living world.
We will explore Biomimicry as a grounding framework for working with and being guided by nature to find solutions to complex challenges, reducing the anxiety and overwhelm which can impact our energy, motivation and ability to act.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with practical tools, greater hope, and a renewed sense of agency as an “ecological citizen”, capable of contributing to positive change and thriving systems in your life and community.
What is this workshop about?
This one-day workshop gently guides participants toward a felt sense of connection with the natural world and its wisdom. By weaving together ancient and contemporary approaches, it invites you to see and embrace nature as a source of mentorship.
Through deep observation exercises, the 13 core routines of nature connection, and locally grounded ecological practices, you’ll nurture both personal mental health and motivation to act for planetary health. You’ll also explore how biomimicry—the practice of emulating nature’s strategies—offers powerful solutions to the challenges currently facing our world and communities.
This workshop introduces some of the Becoming Ecological Citizens pathways and draws inspiration and frameworks from the following thought leaders and works: Janine Benyus and Dr Dayna Baumeister - founders of the biomimicry movement and stewards of Life’s Principles as a design lens, Jon Young - founder of a worldwide deep nature connection and nature based community building movement and holistic tracker, Dr Robin Wall Kimmerer - indigenous scholar and plant scientist who teaches us about reciprocal relationships with the wider living world and the benefits of combining traditional ecological and western forms of knowledge and practice, Prof. Miles Richardson - whose research connects nature-connectedness to mental and emotional health, Dr Lynne Margulis - microbiologist, co-founder of the Gaia Hypothesis, and advocate for symbiosis and cooperation as central to living systems, and Dr Lyla June - indigenous scholar and activist whose regenerative visions of humans as keystone species offer a roadmap to community and global healing.
By restoring your personal connection to nature, you’ll also;
- deepen your ability to perceive the living world as an interconnected and mutually cooperative system,
- better understand your unique role within it, and
- be able to apply biomimicry in turning this connection into hope and action.
What You’ll Learn
- Nature connection exercises to support mental and emotional wellbeing.
- An introduction to Biomimicry and ‘Life’s 26 Principles’ as a framework for regeneration.
- The role of humans as keystone species and ecological citizens.
- How to practice reciprocity and kinship with the natural world.
Who is this for?
This workshop is perfect for anyone experiencing concern or anxiety about our planet's future, including community members, change-makers, wellbeing practitioners, environmentalists, students, and organisers in community-led change initiatives.
Whether you're looking for tools to support your change-making efforts, wanting to rekindle your bond with nature, or simply seeking space to feel hopeful and inspired, this workshop offers something for everyone. You’ll leave with practical tools and inspiration that will help you navigate today’s ecological challenges with renewed purpose.
Why is it important?
In a world of increasing disconnection, hopelessness and apathy, there is an urgent need to rebuild our ecological relationships. Research into reconnection with the living world shows reductions in anxiety, deepening of social and community connections, and an increase in motivation and confidence to act.
We need not struggle alone. Over 3.8 Billion years nature has developed many thousands of approaches and solutions which support the conditions for life to thrive. By rediscovering and emulating these we can creatively and elegantly address the challenges we face, both as individuals and as societies. This workshop weaves together the wisdom of biomimicry and deep nature connection to provide hope, health, and tools toward a thriving future.
